Walking sticks have been a part of a sign of authority through out time. Howard Carter, the archaeologist that opened the tomb of the boy king Tutankhamen, discovered over 130 walking sticks in the king’s tomb. Portraits of King Tutankhamen have the King with different walking sticks in many areas of the tomb. In fact both ancient Greek amphorae and Egyptian hieroglyphics show many individuals using walking sticks and staffs. These individuals that used walking sticks include: Constantine the Great, Moses, Cain and Able. The list goes on.
In Canada the walking stick has its history as well. Canada’s first Prime Minister Sir John A Macdonald the father of Confederation, posed with walking sticks. William Lyon Mackenzie King dressed up on many a day with a top hat and different walking sticks. Walking Sticks in Canada are just as natural as apple pie is in the USA. Canada has a vast wilderness, with many trails and paths; it’s just natural to have walking sticks around the home. Never be ashamed of using a walking stick, please always remember, PRIDE comes before a FALL ;)
Walking sticks have deep history in the USA political stage. Just some of the Presidents include, James Madison, Andrew Jackson, Andrew Johnson, and Thomas Jefferson. Political walking sticks were given out by canadites seeking public office. In 1868 the first manufactured large numbers of political walking sticks came out. After 1912, political walking sticks were used less frequently. Still some walking sticks were in campaigns for Franklin D Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower, John Kennedy, Barry Goldwater, Jimmy Carter and Gerald Ford.
As you can see, walking sticks have great history and great people that have used them. I personally have met with many people that state.. “I am 86 years old; I have never needed walking sticks, and never will.” A month later this person was bed bound because he had a fall. Broke his pelvis. My name is Llano Gorman, and I am trying very hard not to scare you into using walking sticks, however.. people must start looking back at history and understanding that the NEW medical age with Ugly walking sticks has no place and I mean no place in the Health system. Walking Sticks used to be a sign of who you were, and were you came from. It is time that we bring back this attitude. It is time the Walking Sticks of today become Stylish, and fun to have. People do not like having others come up to them and state, what happened to you? Everyone I know would rather have some one come up and state, were did you get that Great Stick? Then you could tell your story about that stylish walking stick and not feel so bad about using walking sticks when you need to.
